The Beatles release their last new song “Now and Then”

Sixty years later, the final “new” Beatles song, “Now and Then,” was released on Thursday.

All four of the original Beatles singers are heard on the new album, with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr effectively completing what was originally an old demo tape by John Lennon. The song incorporates several elements of the group’s characteristic sound and has an emotive chorus that has the voices of McCartney and Lennon harmonizing as they say “I miss you.”

From the same batch of demo tapes that Lennon’s former comrades used to write the songs “Free As a Bird” and “Real Love” in the mid-1990s, came the original “Now and Then,” recorded more than 40 years ago.

Composed by John Lennon in 1978 and finished by McCartney and Starr the previous year, “Now and Then” also includes guitar sounds from the band’s late guitarist George Harrison, including excerpts from a 1995 studio recording. According to an Associated Press story from last month, McCartney also added a new string guitar part with assistance from Giles Martin, the late Beatles producer’s son.

Artificial intelligence was employed in “Now and Then,” for example, to extract John Lennon’s original vocals before McCartney and Starr’s musical enhancements were added in the studio the previous year. A little documentary detailing the creation of “Now and Then” was made available on The Beatles’ official YouTube page on Wednesday.
