The Water Services Corporation (WSC) has announced a €3 million renovation of the Naxxar Reservoir to improve Malta’s water supply reliability and safety. This project is part of the National Investment Plan (NIP), which has already seen upgrades to the Luqa and Naval Reservoirs.

Built in 1938, the Naxxar Reservoir will undergo major upgrades, including repairing a persistent leak, replacing the aging concrete roof, upgrading internal columns, and installing larger exit pipework. These changes aim to strengthen the island’s water distribution system.

Work begins today, January 22, 2025, with the first phase expected to last eight weeks, concluding by mid-March. During this period, the reservoir will be temporarily decommissioned while a retaining wall is built to enable faster restoration of water flow.

To maintain service, WSC has developed a contingency plan to supply the central island directly from production lines. While customers may experience reduced water pressure during this phase, water quality will remain unaffected. Supply will be rerouted through Ta’ Qali reservoirs to ensure high standards.

Additionally, WSC will install solar panels with a 600kWp capacity on the 3,000sqm roof, reflecting its commitment to sustainability.

WSC CEO Karl Cilia emphasized, “This project highlights our dedication to infrastructure excellence and a sustainable water future for Malta.”
